Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are lively birds who are fond of playing, climbing and interact. They love going to playgrounds and parks as well as hiking, local eateries and bars. Apart from being a fun pet they also make loving pets for children.

Despite their adorable nature they are loud and can be a nuisance to those who live near. They can be heard making high-pitched screech-calls and ear-piercing calls, which can be a nuisance in apartments and condos or near children who may be frightened by their roar.

Another interesting characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic which means males and females are difficult to distinguish. Because of this, DNA testing is the only way to determine the sex. Once sex is known pairing of the birds can be attempted and breeding can begin.

Like all pets, blue macaw price and Gold Macaws require training to learn commands, phrases and tricks. This is not a quick process, and it's crucial that the owner is patient and realizes that this isn't an undertaking to be taken lightly. Positive reinforcement can speed up the process, and correct any behavioral issues.

Lolita's care

Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to cease performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also want her relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 blockbuster film Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's reintegration back into the wild, marine biologists hoped Lolita might have a similar fate. Sadly, she did not get the chance to go back to the sea.

Lolita's captors, also known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her in danger. They cause harm to her health by forcing her to perform for tourists. They overexert her with high-speed circle and head-first diving, expose her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also put her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller than her natural habitat.

Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her to be a family member and plan to eventually transport her to open water. The plan would have included a facility located on the west coast of Washington in which she could reside for the remainder of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen will be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the ocean itself not an empty concrete tank.

If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are highly social animals who bond with family members until they die. Lolita has been a captive at Seaquarium for over 40 years. Many activists across the country including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have urged her departure from Seaquarium's stage and eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet

As is the case with any animal species, a captive blue and gold macaw's health is dependent on a healthy diet. These beautiful birds need high-quality food, as well as plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as whole grains. Despite these ongoing health concerns there is a lot of hope that Lolita could be closer to a life in the wild than before. The new owner of the Seaquarium has made a pledge to moving the whale out of her tank and into her home waters in the Pacific.

The plans were not enough to save the whale that passed away on Friday due to what was thought to be a kidney issue.
