Mesothelioma - An Asbestos Illness

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that develops in the linings that protect certain organs. It typically develops in the lungs (pleura) but it can also be found in the chest wall or abdomen, or even in the tests.

People who have been exposed to asbestos for a prolonged period and at high levels are at the risk of developing this disease. Mesothelioma symptoms can manifest between 10 and 50 years after exposure.

Symptoms

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that can affect the linings of some of the body's organs usually caused by exposure to asbestos. It is most commonly found in the linings of the lungs however it can also occur in the linings of the heart and stomach. It is most often seen in people between the ages of 60 and 80, and is more prevalent in men than women.

The exposure to asbestos is the sole known cause of mesothelioma and the signs of cancer usually appear between 10 and 50 years after exposure to the mineral. This is due to stray asbestos fibers that are inhaled or ingested can lay in organ linings for a while before they cause health problems.

Early mesothelioma indicators are often confused with other illnesses such as pneumonia, influenza, or lung problems. This can make it difficult for patients and doctors to identify the condition.
