How to Replace an audi remote key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will display the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test as there are several connector pins, and each one has different functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms when it is in full operation. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is out of gas or injectors aren't firing at all. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. When I start the engine without sparks, I put a piece of tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th one stays shut. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. i get zero ohm. So i assume the problem is somewhere else.

happy-young-woman-with-key-sitting-in-neI also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is not plugged in and is running fine when it is connected but it still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature of that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not certain what to do, as i think i've pretty much eliminated everything else. However, i'm afraid that I may have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and both function in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or at a parts store. It is simple to test them - put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about fuel injector timing etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If you have a problem with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could lead to an engine shut down.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire while in gear. If you are experiencing any of these problems, it is likely that your sensor is deteriorating and should be replaced. The good news is that they are quite affordable and easy to find, especially if you're looking at an Bosch model, which is what ours are. If you prefer, GM's version of this part is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the cause of many issues with your vehicle. It is an important part of the transmission in your replacement audi key cost uk audi new key A4 key (menwiki.men) because it relays information to the ECU on how fast or slowly the engine of the car is turning. If the sensor fails, it could affect the performance of the transmission and the rest of the car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU then processes this signal to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost and then sends it on to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. You can also check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. It should show approximately 1000 ohms resistance between these two points. This is a standard component across the audi keyless entry 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC to the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU, so the best parts could be found in wrecking yards.
