The company began expanding overseas in the late 1980s to profit from new markets and sales opportunities. It created the Cera Trading Company, importing and marketing other manufacturers' products to complement its own line of plumbing fittings and sanitary earthenware. This strategy helped to increase sales and expand the market share of the company globally.
In the 1990s, Toto began to focus on research and development of water-related appliances. It also redesigned its system of distribution to better serve customers and improve profit. The company used the same just-in time approach in its supply chain management and sales program. This led to a higher level customer satisfaction.
Toto continues to invent with regard to toilet technology. Its latest toilet, for example, has a strong tornado flush that is more environmentally green than traditional toilets. The company makes use of recycled water for its manufacturing process and has a green buying policy. The first Toto museum opened in the year 2015.
