Pragmatic Free Trail Meta is an open data platform that facilitates research into pragmatic trials. It collects and distributes cleaned trial data, ratings and evaluations using PRECIS-2. This allows for diverse meta-epidemiological studies to compare treatment effect estimates across trials of different levels of pragmatism.
Background
Pragmatic trials provide evidence from the real world that can be used to make clinical decisions. However, the usage of the term "pragmatic" is not consistent and its definition as well as assessment requires clarification. Pragmatic trials must be designed to guide clinical practice and policy decisions, rather than confirm the validity of a clinical or physiological hypothesis. Other advantages of pragmatic trials are the ability to use existing data sources, and a greater probability of detecting significant changes than traditional trials. However, pragmatic trials may be prone to limitations that compromise their reliability and generalizability. The participation rates in certain trials could be lower than anticipated because of the healthy-volunteering effect, financial incentives, or competition from other research studies. A lot of pragmatic trials are restricted by the need to enroll participants on time. Certain pragmatic trials lack controls to ensure that observed variations aren't due to biases during the trial.
