Lolita's Personality
Macaws are a great companion bird. They are intelligent and affectionate. They thrive in well-rounded families. They are prone to becoming bored and will find other ways to entertain themselves when their owners don't interact with them enough. If they aren't socialized properly macaws can become aggressive and even bite. It is important that boundaries are clearly defined so that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.
Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds that love to play, interact, and climb. They require at least 2 to 3 hours each day out of their cages for physical exercise and mental stimulation. They enjoy playing games as well as listening to music and learning new tricks. They love visiting playgrounds and parks as well as hiking, local eateries and bars. In addition to being a fun pet, they are also great companions for children.
These birds can be very loud, despite their love for their mate. They can also be a nuisance for those who live nearby. They can be heard making ear-shattering calls and screech-calls, which can be disruptive in condominiums and apartments, or near children who might be startled by their noise.
This species is also monomorphic. Females and males can be difficult to distinguish. Due to this, the only way to reliably determine sex is via DNA testing. Once sex is established pairing of the birds can be attempted and breeding can begin.
Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets, require training to learn commands and phrases. This isn't a simple process, and it's important that the owner has patience and understands that this isn't a task to be taken lightly. Positive reinforcement can help accelerate the process and help correct any behavior issues.
Lolita's Care
For years activists have been calling for Lolita's retirement from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 blockbuster film Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's reintegration back into the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped that Lolita might have a similar fate. Sadly, she never had the chance to return to the ocean.
The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They undermine her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, overexerting her with head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, making her lose weight and harming her immune system. Additionally, they place her in an incredibly small tank that is only one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.
In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita an aunt of theirs, promised to work on a plan with a group of Lolita supporters, known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe to transport her eventually to open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen on the west coast of Washington where she could live the rest of her days and receive human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and surrounded by the ocean and not a concrete tank.
If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild, killers whales are social animals and connect with their families until they die. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for over 40 years. People from all over the country have called for Lolita's release from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. They include Ric O'Barry who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

A golden and blue macaw is a lovely companion, but also intelligent. They are known to quickly learn new words and tricks and they are extremely adaptable. This bird is perfect for those just beginning their journey to avian companionship.
In addition, this bird requires lots of interaction, and will bond with her human family members easily. Blue and gold macaws are known for their loud vocalizations including "flock call" as part of their natural behavior. The Miami Seaquarium has released a series of information about Lolita's health, and her status but there are still questions. Some experts, including Akromas who was a trainer or oversaw Lolita's care at some point, have raised concerns about her diet. According to the latest update on the Friends of Lolita site, she consumes 115 pounds of salmon per day, along with capelin, herring and squid.
The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they feed their killer whales, specifically Lolita. The 57-year-old orca was taken from Puget Sound in 1970, and while the species is threatened in the wild, she is in an aquarium that many say is too small for her.
Lolita's Health
While her beauty is unquestionable Lolita's health continues deteriorate. Her health has been a cause of concern for animal welfare organizations who would like to see her released back to the wild. Lolita who has been living at the Miami Seaquarium in Miami since 1970, has been a tourist attraction for decades. She has suffered from chronic illnesses and a debilitating infection that has left her in a fragile condition.
The Dolphin Company, which now owns the Miami Seaquarium and is owned by the Dolphin Company has not provided any details regarding the condition of Lolita. However, the non-profit organization Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. They show that she is ageing quickly and that her health is deteriorating.
Since her captor doesn't have to divulge the information, it's unclear which specific health issues the orca is suffering from. However, a repository of necropsies from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a major factor in the death of captive orcas.
Despite the continuing health concerns of Lolita Many people believe that she could be closer than ever to living a wild life. The new owner of the Seaquarium has expressed a commitment to removing the whale of her tank and into her home waters in the Pacific.
The decision comes after years of public pressure as well as from PETA and PETA, to have the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea where she can swim in the ocean and even meet the orca believed to be her mother. These plans were too late to save the whale who passed away on Friday due to what was thought to be a kidney issue.
